was sitting outside my new home yesterday (we just moved last week, and we love the newplace), watching the world go by.
There were people in cars, in a hurry to get to their next appointment. There were birds flyingby, insects just as busy as the people in cars, plants and weeds thriving in the humid Guamclimate.
Inside the house, my children were also busy, as ever, making a mess of the house (which mywife and I would soon clean up), getting into things, their natural curiosity overpowering ourprevious pleas for them not to play with lotion or take things apart.
The sky was slightly overcast and there was a cool breeze, quite strong and pleasant actually.
It’s not often that most of us just sit quietly, and allow the world to pass us by.
Why not?
What is so important that it can’t wait until later? What email must be answered right thismoment? Do we really need to read all those articles online, all those messages from others, allthose newspapers and magazines? Do we need to have the television and radio and Internet onall the time?
Is life passing us by as we keep our minds super-busy? Are we missing out on the beautifulworld around us as we constantly think about the future — what we need to do, our anxietiesabout what might happen — and the past — what we did wrong, what someone else did to us,what we said, what should have happened?
When was the last time you just sat, and observed? Why not do it today?

To respect my work, my associates and myself. To be honest and fair with them as I expect them to be honest and fair with me. To be a man whose word carries weight. To be a booster, not a knocker; a pusher, not a kicker; a motor, not a clog.
To base my expectations of reward on a solid foundation of service rendered; to be willing to pay the price of success in honest effort. To look upon my work as opportunity, to be seized with joy and made the most of, and not as painful drudgery to be reluctantly endured.
To remember that success lies within myself; in my own brain, my own ambition, my own courage and determination. To expect difficulties and force my way through them, to turn hard experiences into capital for future struggles.
To interest my heart and soul in my work, and aspire to the highest efficiency in the achievement of results. To be patiently receptive of just criticism and profit from its teaching. To treat equals and superiors with respect, and subordinates with kindly encouragement.
To make a study of my business duties; to know my work from the ground up. To mix brains with my efforts and use system and method in all I undertake. To find time to do everything needful by never letting time find me or my subordinates doing nothing. To hoard days as a miser does dollars, to make every hour bring me dividends in specific results accomplished. To steer clear of dissipation and guard my health of body and peace of mind as my most precious stock in trade.
Finally, to take a good grip on the joy of life; to play the game like a gentleman; to fight against nothing so hard as my own weakness, and endeavor to grow in business capacity, and as a man, with the passage of every day of time.

Touch Me is a soliloquy(独白)composed by Hank Miller, about the Vietnam (越南)Veterans(退伍军人) Memorial in Washington, D.C. also known as “The Wall”.
Touch me. Don’t be afraid. I can’t hurt you. Go ahead and touch my smooth surface. Feel the cold, glass-like smoothness and the crevices(裂缝) and lines that make me what I am. Use both hands if you wish. We are more similar than you dare to believe.
Touch my face. Yes, I have a face like yours. It has weathered(饱经风霜的) the centuries as yours has the years. My face portrays my evolution. Yours, the birth and death of a generation. My face has aged like yours as we have endured together the testimony(证据) of earth elements.
I have eyes like yours. My inscriptions(碑铭) stare out at you as I search for the meaning of why we are here. I look into your eyes and see who you are. Who am I? I was formed millions of years past and now you see the results of my evolution.
I can feel your hands and the sweat from your palms flow into the countless combination of the letters that make me. I know you. I have known you since I was able to breathe in the air as my smoothness began to take shape and my color matured along with natural flaws. You have known me since the days when you came to take me from my mother.
You cannot hear me. I am static(静态的) and unmoving. But, I can hear your murmurs(低语) and your cries of pain and sadness. Your sons and daughters ask why? There are no answers. I am very old. I have seen everything and I am none the wiser for the pain and suffering and I have witnessed since I rose from the bowels of the earth. I have witnessed the conflict, the death, the civilizations, and the societies that have come before you. Yet I remain mystified about this day.
I feel sad yet alive with a purpose. I have come to know those who are now an integral part of the reason for my being here at this place and time. That purpose has become apparent as I stand before you on this day while your brethren (同胞)gather to witness my reflections and the changes of light that mirror your soul.
I am a reflection of you…
I am all of you…
I am your spirit..
I am The Wall.

Pain is constant companion and isn't very good one. I try to reason with this and I end of feeling miserable. I can not help but think about you. You, who has so much to give and share with me. Even when I was young, you were constant figure. You were there to see me grow up. I cried and laught, I learned and you were there to guide me. With your gray hair and chunky glasses. I would watch you think and blued and you sudden smile would lide up your face as quickly as it come. That is the very thing I love about you.You smile, I think about the times I missed being with you. So many years have passed since I saw you again. And for a breath moment I imagined you not being in my life. I wanna to cry, but I knew you were be there, as you always were.The gray hair has turned to white. And with that came a wiry frame that was fragile. Still, the eyes was ever and mind that was well running. You taught me to be strong and live for my dreams. If you were wishes for hunger for knowledge. You taught me to love learning. Always telling me that knowledge is constant thing. You were so strong, so wise and your presense was always comfort. I always love being by your side. You always gave me a hug when I fell down. I never love too crowds and you always seem to understand that not pression me to jion in the others or pretend to have a good time.I got lost the books you taught me to read. Those books which you gave me to learn more about the world. Ever so after remind of the things you taught me. You always love books. You never said much, but I always knew that every time we saw each other. You were glad to see me as I always glad to see you. I remember you with the teary face and wasteful smile. My pain is more insistant and try to hold on to the hope that you will pull through this. Like the strong person that you were. I love you grandpa.

The lives of most men are determined by their environment. They accept the circumstances amid which fate has thrown them not only resignation but even with good will. They are like streetcars running contentedly on their rails and they despise the sprightly flitter that dashes in and out of the traffic and speeds so jauntily across the open country. I respect them; they are good citizens, good husbands, and good fathers, and of course somebody has to pay the taxes; but I do not find them exciting.
I am fascinated by the men, few enough in all conscience, who take life in their own hands and seem to mould it in to their own liking. It may be that we have no such thing as free will, but at all events, we have the illusion of it. At a cross-road it does seem to us that we might go either to the right or to the left and, the choice once made, it is difficult to see that the whole course of the world's history obliged us to take the turning we did.

The thermometer had dropped to 18 degrees below zero, but still chose to sleep in the porch as usual. In the evening, the most familiar sight to me would be stars in the sky. Though they were a mere sprinkle of twinkling dots, yet I had become so accustomed to them that their occasional absence would bring me loneliness and ennui.
It had been snowing all night, not a single star in sight. My roommate and I, each wrapped in a quilt, were seated far apart in a different comer of the porch, facing each other and chatting away.
She exclaimed pointing to something afar, "Look, Venus in rising" I looked up and saw nothing bur a lamp round the bend in a mountain path. I beamed and said pointing to a tiny lamplight on the opposite mountain, "It's Jupiter over there!"
More and more lights came into sight as we kept pointing here and there. Lights from hurricane lamps flickering about in the pine forest created the scene of a star-studded sky. With the distinction between sky and forest obscured by snowflakes, the numerous lamp-lights now easily passed for as many stars.
Completely lost in a make-believe world, I seemed to see all the lamplights drifting from the ground. With the illusory stars hanging still overhead, I was spared the effort of tracing their positions when I woke up from my dreams in the dead of night.
Thus I found consolation even on a lonely snowy night!

Summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words. Summer is the glorious time of the year when most of us can put on our shorts and short-sleeved shirts and actually feel the air and sunlight on our skin; when we don't have to turn up the heat in the morning when we get up; but also when we lay hot and sweaty in bed, unable to sleep at times (those of us who don't have air conditioning, anyway); when we get the sunburn and the heatstroke and all those wonderful things.
All green and fair the summer lies, just budded from the bud of spring, with tender blue of wistful skies, and winds that softly sing. How beautiful the summer night is, which is not night, but a sunless, yet unclouded day,descending upon earth with dews and shadows and refreshing coolness! How beautiful the long mild twilight,which, like a silver clasp, unites today with yesterday!
Summer is a sailor in a rowboat and ice-cream on your dress when you're four years old. Summer is a man with his coat off, wet sand between your toes, the smell of a garden an hour before moonrise. Summer is silk itself, a giant geranium and music from a flute far away!
No matter how we see it, summer has a magic that we can't deny - all four seasons do.

Venice offers a unique travel experience with plenty of charm. You'll notice something missing as soon as you arrive in Venice - traffic noise! So, as you walk down the narrow streets, you only have to dodge people. And there are a lot of them! About 19 million tourists a year go to Venice for the romantic atmosphere, the art and the food.
While walking along the streets is fun, you can get around much easier on the city's many canals. As you cruise down the Grand Canal, Venice's main "street", in a vaporetto or water taxi, you'll pass under the Rialto Bridge, a famous Venetian landmark. Get off the water taxi and walk across the bridge. Enjoy the view and the many shops that line the bridge.
In those shops, you'll likely see lots of the glass that Venice is famous for. To see glass-making demonstrations,visit the tiny island of Murano. In 1291 all glassmakers in Venice had to move to Murano because their foundries endangered the city's many wooden buildings. While on Murano, don't forget to buy some glass as a souvenir.
No matter how long you're in Venice, you'll find an abundance of things to see and do. Museums, churches and the city's delicious seafood all deserve attention. And last but not least, take a romantic, relaxing gondola ride through the canals at night. You can then truly experience the charm of Venice.

As a teenager,I felt I was always letting people down. I was rebellious1 out-side,but I wantedto be liked inside.
Once I left home to hitch-hike2 to California with my friend Penelope. The trip wasn't easy,andthere were many times I didn't feel safe. One situation in particular kept me grateful to stillbe alive. When I returned home,I was different,not so outwardly sure of myself.
I was happy to be home. But then I noticed that Penelope,who was staying with us,waswearing my clothes. And my family seemed to like her better than me. I wondered if I would bemissed if I weren't there. I told my mom,and she explained that though Penelope was a lovelygirl,no one could replace me. I pointed out,"She is more patient and is neater than I haveever been." My mom said these were wonderful qualities,but I was the only person who couldfill my role. She made me realize that even with my faults-and there were many-I was a lovedmember of the family who couldn't be replaced.
I became a searcher,wanting to find out who I was and what made me unique. My view ofmyself was changing. I wanted a solid base to start from. I started to resist3 pressure to actin ways that I didn't like any more,and I was delighted by who I really was. I came to feelmuch more sure that no one can ever take my place.
Each of us holds a unique place in the world. You are special,no matter what others say orwhat you may think. So forget about being replaced. You can't be.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about,don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twiseted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothin in you
Except the Will which says to them:"Hold on!";
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings -nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty second' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!
你仍能保持头脑情形;
你仍能坚信自己,让所有的怀疑动摇;
不要太乐观,不要自以为是;
如果你是个追梦人——不要被梦主宰;
如果你是个爱思考的人——光想会达不到目标;
把两者当骗子看待;
被恶棍扭曲,用于蒙骗傻子;
然后俯身,用破烂的工具把它修补;
不要抱怨你的失败;
只有意志告诉你“坚持!”;
伴王行走,能保持距离;
如果仇敌和好友都不害你;
如果所有人都指望你,却无人全心全意;

“We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite...”
I do not know who wrote those words, but I have always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it. We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just as a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.
We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.
I want the future to be better than the past. I don’t want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the remainder of our lives.
The past is gone and static. Nothing we can do will change it. The future is before us and dynamic. Everything we do will affect it. Each day brings with it new frontiers, in our homes and in our business, if we only recognize them. We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeavor.

Often we're told that we have to suffer now — give up what we want — in order to succeed later, that in order to save we must sacrifice. Give up instant gratification to get delayed gratification.
But you can do both.
For years, I was confused about this, as I read books and websites that sent me two different messages:
Pleasure later. The first message was that in order to be successful, in order to build wealth, you have to delay gratification. You can't have instant gratification and be successful.
Pleasure now. The second message was usually from other sources on Happiness, but sometimes from the same source: enjoy life now, while you can, because it's short and you never know when your last day will come. Live every day like it's your last. Trouble is, I agree with both messages. And if you read this site often, you’ll see that I send both messages: Live frugally and simply! But also enjoy life!
That's because I've reconciled the two philosophies into one: Live life now and enjoy it to the fullest — without destroying your future. The key to doing that? Find ways to enjoy life completely, utterly, maximally … that don’t cost your future very much.
Here are some tips for actually living that philosophy:
Find free or cheap pleasures. Frugality does not have to be boring or restrictive … if you use your imagination. Be creative and find ways to have fun — loads of it — without spending much money. Have a picnic at the park, go to the beach, do crafts, board games, fly a kite, make art, bake cookies … I could list a hundred things, and you could come up with a few hundred more. Make a list of simple pleasures, and enjoy them to the maximum. This is the key to the whole idea of enjoying life now without spending tomorrow's dollar. See Savor the Little Things .
Make simplifying fun. I'm a big fan of simplifying my life, from decluttering to creating a simple lifestyle in every way. And to me, this is great fun. I get rid of stuff (and possibly make money selling it) and have a blast doing it. That’s good math.
Rediscover what’s important. Oftentimes we spend tons of money, shopping, going out, watching movies, eating out … without really enjoying life. And when we stop to think about it, we never have time for the things we really want to do. Well, that's probably because your life is filled with things that aren't very important to you. Instead, step back and really think about what’s important to you. Then get rid of the other (expensive) stuff, and focus on what's important. Listen to some stuff on my list: my wife and kids, other friends and family, reading, writing, exercising, volunteering, spending quiet time in contemplation. Guess how many of those things cost a lot of money? Read more here .
Make people a priority. This is related to the above point, but I thought I'd give it a little more emphasis. If you give "stuff" a priority — stuff like gadgets, nice furnishings, nice clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc. — then you will spend a lot of money. But if you make people a priority — the people you love most, you close friends and family — you don't need to spend a dime to enjoy life. Make some time to visit with friends, or your parents … and have a conversation with them that doesn't involve eating out or going to the movies. Just sit, have some iced tea or hot cocoa (depending on the weather), and talk. Tell jokes and laugh your heads off. Talk about books you've read, movies you’ve watched, new things going on in your life, your hopes and dreams. And make time for your kids or your significant other — really spend time with them, doing things that don't cost money. (See Spend Time with Family and Loved Ones , 100 Ways to Have Fun With Your Kids and 50 Ways to Be Romantic on the Cheap .)
Find time for yourself. Make time every day, and every week, to spend time alone. It really gives more meaning and enjoyment to your life, rather than rushing through life with no time to think, to breathe. For ideas on how to make this time, see these ways to create time for solitude .
Sometimes, splurge. You shouldn't restrict yourself from expensive pleasures all the time — it's not good to develop the feeling of deprivation. To prevent that, once in awhile, buy yourself something … or better yet, give yourself a decadent treat. I love things with dark chocolate or berries. Crepes with ice cream and berries are one of my favorites. Just don't go overboard … and learn to enjoy the splurge to the fullest. If you truly take the time to enjoy a treat, you don't need a lot of it.
Track your successes. It doesn't really matter how you track your success … you can use gold stars for creating a new simplifying or frugalfying habit, or a spreadsheet chart to track your decreasing debt and increasing savings or investments. Tracking is a great way to not only provide motivation, but make the process of changing fun.
Reward yourself. And in order to make it more fun, celebrate every little success! Set rewards for yourself (hopefully not too expensive!) along your path to success — celebrate one day, two days, three days, a week, two weeks, three, a month … you get the idea.
Volunteer. One of the most rewarding things for my family has been when we have managed to volunteer. It's actually something we only started doing last year, but since then, we've done it a bunch of times in a number of different ways. And while it doesn't cost a dime, it is tremendously satisfying in ways that money could never buy. Read more .
Live in the moment. Learn to think not so much about the past or future, but about what you are going through right now. Be present. It may seem trite, but it's the key to enjoying life to the fullest — without having to spend money. Think about it — you can spend money on eating out, but if you are not really thinking about what you're eating, you may not enjoy it much at all. But if you cook a simple but delicious meal, and really taste every bite, it can be tremendously enjoyable without costing a lot. Read more .
Slow down. In the same way, you can't really enjoy life to the fullest if it's rushing past you like it's on fast forward. Ever think about how quickly a week, a month, or a year goes by? Perhaps you're in the fast lane too much. Try slowing down, and things will be less stressful and more enjoyable. Drive slower , eat slower , live slower .
Learn to find cheap, cool stuff. Call me crazy, but I love shopping at thrift stores. You can find so many cool things there, and it costs so little. Garage sales are the same way. Or check out Freecycle , or read 20 Ways to Find Free or Cheap Books .

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to bethere, they serve some sort of purpose, to teach you a lesson or help figure out who you are orwho you want to become. You never know who these people may be - your roommate, neighbor,professor, long lost friend, lover or even a complete stranger who, when you lock eyes withthem, you know that very moment that they will affect your life in some profound way.
And sometimes things happen to you and at the time they may seem horrible, painful andunfair, but in reflection you realize that without overcoming those obstacles, you would havenever realized your potential, strength, will power or heart. Everything happens for a reason.Nothing happens by chance or by means of good or bad luck. Illness, injury, love, lost momentsof true greatness and sheer stupidity - all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without thesesmall tests, if they be events, illnesses or relationships, life would be like a smoothly paved,straight, flat road to nowhere. Safe and comfortable but dull and utterly pointless.
The people you meet who affect your life and the successes and downfalls you experience - theyare the ones who create who you are. Even the bad experiences can be learned from. Thoselessons are the hardest and probably the most important ones.
If someone hurts you, betrays you or breaks your heart, forgive them for they have helped youlearn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart to. Ifsomeone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you, butbecause they are teaching you to love and opening your heart and eyes to things you wouldhave never seen or felt without them.
Make every day count. Appreciate every moment and take from it everything that you possiblycan, for you may never be able to experience it again.
Talk to people you have never talked to before, and actually listen. Let yourself fall in love,break free and set your sights high. Hold your head up because you have every right to. Tellyourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don't believe in yourself, noone else will believe in you either. You can make of your life anything you wish. Create your ownlife and then go out and live it.

In the busy city of New York, such an astonishing thing that ever happened.
On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the subway station, playing his violin. Though the music was great, people were quickly going home for the weekend. In this case, many of them slowed down their paces and put some money into the hat of the young man.
The next day, the young artist came to the gate of the subway station, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different than the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it on the ground and put some stones on it. Then he adjusted the violin and began playing. It seemed more pleasant to listen to.
Before long, the young violinist was surrounded with people, who were all attracted by the words on that paper. It said, “Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistaken. Please come to claim it soon.”
Seeing this, it caused a great excitement and people wondered what it could be. After about half an hour, a middle-aged man ran there in a hurry and rushed through the crowd to the violinist and grabbed his shoulders and said, “Yes, it’s you. You did come here. I knew that you’re an honest man and would certainly come here.”
The young violinist asked calmly, “Are you Mr. George Sang?”
The man nodded. The violinist asked, “Did you lose something?”
“Lottery. It’s lottery,” said the man.
The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang’s name was seen. “Is it?” he asked.
George nodded promptly and seized the lottery ticket and kissed it, then he danced with the violinist.
The story turned out to be this: George Sang is an office clerk. He bought a lottery ticket issued by a bank a few days ago. The awards opened yesterday and he won a prize of $500,000. So he felt very happy after work and felt the music was so wonderful, that he took out 50 dollars and put in the hat. However the lottery ticket was also thrown in. The violinist was a student at an Arts College and had planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna. He had booked the ticket and would fly that morning. However when he was cleaning up he found the lottery ticket. Thinking that the owner would return to look for it, he cancelled the flight and came back to where he was given the lottery ticket.
Later someone asked the violinist: “At that time you were in needed to pay the tuition fee and you had to play the violin in the subway station every day to make the money. Then why didn’t you take the lottery ticket for yourself?”
The violinist said, “Although I don’t have much money, I live happily; but if I lose honesty I won’t be happy forever.”
Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us. If we bear ourselves in a deceptive and dishonest way, we may succeed temporarily. However, from the long-term view, we will be a loser. Such kind of people are just like the water on the mountain. It stands high above the masses at the beginning, but gradually it comes down inch by inch and loses the chance of going up.

ConsiderYOU. In all time before now and in all time to come, there has never been and will never be anyone just like you. You are unique in the entire history and future of the universe. Wow! Stop and think about that. You're better than one in a million, or a billion, or a gazillion
You are the only one like you in a sea of infinity!
You're amazing! You're awesome! And by the way, TAG, you're it. As amazing and awesome as you already are, you can be even more so. Beautiful young people are the whimsey of nature, but beautiful old people are true works of art. But you don't become "beautiful" just by virtue of the aging process.
Real beauty comes from learning, growing, and loving in the ways of life. That is the Art of Life. You can learn slowly, and sometimes painfully, by just waiting for life to happen to you. Or you can choose to accelerate your growth and intentionally devour life and all it offers. You are the artist that paints your future with the brush of today.
Paint a Masterpiece.
God gives every bird its food, but he doesn't throw it into its nest. Wherever you want to go, whatever you want to do, it's truly up to you.
